Businesses, skilled trades groups join growing list of supporters backing a new advanced manufacturing project in Genesee County

FLINT, Mich. — Support in Genesee County for a job-creating advanced manufacturing project continues to grow with new businesses, labor groups and trade groups adding their names to a list of stakeholders excited about the potential of the Advanced Manufacturing District (AMD) of Genesee County.

Among those now officially supporting the work of the Flint & Genesee Economic Alliance to attract a company to the site in Mundy Township include Siwek Construction, International Union of Bricklayers & Allied Craftworkers (BAC) Local 2 of Michigan, UA Local 370 Plumbers & Pipefitters, Genesee, Lapeer & Shiawassee Building Trades Council, the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 948, and Sheet Metal Workers Local 7.

“We’re thrilled to join more than 30 businesses, organizations and community stakeholders in supporting this amazing economic development project that will create local, good-paying jobs,” said Bryce Moe, president of Siwek Construction. “A new project here would benefit everyone, from the construction workers who would build a facility to our young people who would be able to find a career close to home.”

The Flint & Genesee Economic Alliance, a division of the Flint & Genesee Group, recently received nearly $260 million in state grants to purchase land needed to fill out the 1,000-acre site. The site is well-positioned to be home to an advanced manufacturer that will create thousands of new jobs, pump millions of dollars into the local economy and help bring the supply chain back to the United States.

Gregory Remington, business manager and financial secretary for IBEW Local 948, grew up near the site in Mundy Township and has been working in the electrical industry for more than 30 years.

“We need a project that creates good-paying working class jobs in Genesee County,” he said. “Being home to a new advanced manufacturer is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for our electrician members and our entire region that will see additional revenue and opportunities for local small businesses.”

“Every day we’re hearing from people who live and work in Genesee County about their excitement and optimism that an advanced manufacturing project can help to turn around our county and our region,” said Tyler Rossmaessler, the executive director of the Flint & Genesee Economic Alliance. “This site is among the best in the country and is key in our plan to bring a large, job-creating project here.”

“It’s exciting to see so many different businesses, groups and organizations supporting an effort that will mean jobs for generations in Genesee County,” said Paul Dunford, president of BAC Local 2. “We work with local young people getting their start in the trades and it’s very heartwarming to know their future could be right here in Genesee County.”
